Weekly Assignments and Home Learning Material

Below are various activities and resources for home learning

  • If you did not get a packet in the mail, pickup a 6th grade packet at  Rebecca M. Johnson School, Arthur T. Talmadge Elementary School, and Warner Elementary School or any school providing free lunches. 

  • Go on i-Ready ELA daily for 20-30 minutes. ( access at Springfield Public Schools homepage. Go to Resources - Student Links - Link to Student Application Page of my SPS - then sign in) All students know their sign-in information​

  • Go on i-Ready Math daily for 20-30 minutes. Practice multiplication and division!

  • Go to Kileymiddle.com. Check out the Learning Links and Free On-Line Learning icon for additional support and practice. This will provide you with various websites you can work on. 

  • Go to the SPS home page. On the home page press the slide arrows until you see a heading called "Learning From Home." Click it on. Scroll down to 6th grade. It will take you to resources for 6th grade. It provides several awesome websites and activities provided from the district.

  • Help your parents at home by doing chores, share information about something you have learned in school this year, or play a game together.

  • Please have a notebook handy that you can bring back to school with the work you completed. You can complete it on paper or use your parent communication book as a notebook for home learning.

April 6-10 assignments: 

  • April 6-10: Vocabulary words. Find the definition of the following vocabulary words and use each word in a sentence: concentration, descendant, familiar, beliefs, absolute location, instruction, obtain, mourn, numerator, and strategy.

  • Explain Pangaea the best you can using resources online and write a summary explaining Alfred Wegener's theory of the "Continental Drift."

  • Research "Plate Tectonics." What are tectonic plates and what causes them to move?  Which natural processes occur as a result of tectonic plate movement? Check out videos on youtube about plate tectonics. Write about what you learned. 

  • Describe the 4 layers of the Earth. What happens within each layer? Check out videos on youtube about the layers of the Earth. Write about what you learned. 

  • April 6-10 writing prompts. You can do a writing prompt daily:

  1. April Fool’s Day! What joke have you played or would you play on your friends?

  2. Imagine helium balloons could lift your house. Tell what happens next. 

  3. Would you rather parachute from a plane, cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope, or sail around the world by yourself? Why?

  4. What would you do if you could be invisible for a day?

  5. If you could be any animal in the world for 24 hours, which animal would you be? Why? 

April 13-17assignments:

  • April 13 – 17 Vocabulary Words: Find the definition of the following vocabulary words and use each word in a sentence:  demonstrate, choir, myth, penalty, poem, routine, inquire, quote.

  • Daily Writing prompts:

  1. Through the years new inventions have changed the way we live. Think about one invention that has had an impact on the way you live. Now write to explain to your teacher how this invention has changed your life. 

  2. Your principal wants to invite a celebrity speaker to your school. Think about the celebrity you would choose to have speak; then, write a letter to persuade your principal to invite this person. Be sure to include convincing reasons and details to support your choice. 

  3. On April 14, 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg shortly before midnight causing it to sink at 2:20 am on April 15th. Describe the Titanic and explain what happen. Research it!

  4. Imagine a giant box is delivered to your front doorstep with your name on it. Write a funny story. What’s inside and what happens when you open it?

  5. Today is Sherlock Holmes’ birthday. Sherlock was known as the “World's Greatest Detective," who dressed in a deerstalker cap, Scottish cape, and always waved a large magnifying glass. Research Sherlock Holmes. Who is he?

  • List the continents. Then describe each continent in your own words. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you read each continent’s name?

April 22, 2020  "EARTH DAY:" 

Earth Day was a response to our environment in crisis. We had so many oil spills, smog everywhere, and rivers were being polluted. People were throwing their trash in the ocean and rivers etc..

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest and show others how people were destroying planet Earth. The main purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness of how our actions as people have on our environment and on our planet, Earth. Everyone can make a difference, even you in the small thing you do every day. Watch the following video.

  1. April 27th is National Tell a Story Day. On National Tell A Story Day, it does not matter if the story is a short story or a long story, fiction or nonfiction, a tall tale or folklore. Write me a story!

  2. Did you know that April is Frog Month? Frogs are amphibians. Research a rare frog and write a paragraph describing the frogs unique characteristics.

  3. Sixth grade is a time of many changes. Describe the changes that have taken place in your life since you entered sixth grade. For instance, you could write about school, friends, family, or other changes.

  4. On rainy days, our plans often change, and we must find other things to do. Think about what you do for fun on rainy days. Then, write a paragraph describing how to have fun on rainy days.

  5. You want to get an unusual pet, yet your parents/guardians are telling you “no way!” You would have to be quite persuasive when you describe this new pet idea to your parent/guardian. Tell about the pet and convince your parent/guardian to let you have it.

  • 3. Pollution is a serious problem in our society. Pollution is something introduced into the environment that is dirty, unclean or has a harmful effect. There are four types of pollution: air, noise, water, and soil or land pollution. What can be done to stop pollution? Write an essay describing some of the types of pollution and how we can solve them. For example, toxic waste dumped into the water is an example of water pollution.

  • 4. What would happen if we had one day there would be no laws! What do you think would happen? Write me a story about a day you had where there were no rules or laws. What do you think would happen if there were no laws for a day in Springfield, Massachusetts?

  • 5.  Make a list of as many things you can think of that need air to grow.

  • 1. Today is May 11th. Today is National Eat What You Want Day! It’s about having one day a year of eating with no regrets. Whether you love donuts or fast food, today is your day to gratify without feeling guilty. If you could eat whatever you wanted for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, what would you plan? Write a menu of what you would eat for your three meals and don’t forget snacks and dessert!  

  • 2. This morning my mom asked me if I wanted to go shopping. I said “sure, but can we go to my favorite store.?” So, we went to my favorite store, _________. We were walking around the store when suddenly I could not find my mom. After walking around for hours, I fell asleep. I woke up and realized I was locked inside my favorite store overnight. Suddenly, _________

  • 3. Make two list. The first one is a list of words that describe you as a child.  Make a second list that describes you as you are now.  How are these lists the same?  How are they different? 

  • 4. Persuade someone why music or art or computers are important in your life.  Convince them to appreciate your viewpoint. Write an argument as to why one of these is important to you and give reasons to support your choice.

  • 5. It’s May 15th National Chocolate Chip Day!  n 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman Massachusetts must have been curious what a little bit of chocolate would add to her cookies. While working at the Toll House Inn, she added cut-up chunks of semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe.  The cookies were a huge success and in 1939 Wakefield signed an agreement with Nestle to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging.  In exchange for the recipe, Wakefield received a lifetime supply of chocolate.  The Nestle brand Toll House cookies got its name from the Inn. Make a list of as many things you can think of that could be made with chocolate then enjoy something with chocolate today!

In addition, the human body is a remarkable biological machine that is made up of many systems working together to allow for us life, movement, growth, repair, reproduction, the ability to think and so much more. Each system is made up of organs and other body structures that work together to allow us to do things and a specific function necessary for us to survive.


Lookup the following systems and describe each system.

What is the function of each system? What does the system do? What organs is involved? Give an example of a time you are using this system.

The skeletal system is the framework of your body. The human skeletal system consists of all the bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments in your body. Altogether, the skeleton makes up about 20 percent of a person's body weight. Your skeletal system supports your body. The skeletal system consists of your bones which protect and support your internal organs such as your heart, lungs etc.

The Muscular System is made up of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. Muscles help us to move our body parts. The muscular system works with the skeletal system. It provides movement of our body; it helps us maintain posture and circulates blood throughout our body.

Daily Writing Prompts: Do one each day


1. Write a persuasive letter. A persuasive letter intends to convince readers to believe in an idea, an opinion, or to do something. A persuasive essay is one in which you attempt to get the reader to agree with your point of view. Write a letter to the principal explaining why you believe recess should be allowed in middle school.

2. Would you rather have a pet dinosaur or a robot? Explain.

3. Would you rather grow up fast or stay a kid forever. Provide 3 good reasons for your choice.

4. An argumentative essay is a writing piece meant to persuade or convince someone to think the way you do. Do you believe violent games make people more likely to be violent in real life? Write an argumentative essay convincing people that violent games make or do not make people more violent in real life.

5. Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who was forced into hiding during World War II. So, who is Anne Frank?

The Digestive System:

We all know that we need to eat food to survive, but how does our body take that big bowl of cereal or delicious apple and turn it into energy? To find the answer, we need to take a deep dive into your body’s digestive system. Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into smaller parts so that the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy.
